About this calculator
Sale signs are designed to look generous. A discount calculator cuts through the marketing and tells you the two numbers that matter: what you will actually pay, and how much you are really saving. It also handles the trickier cases — stacked coupons and sales tax — that shoppers often get wrong in their heads.
How it works
The sale price is the original price minus the discount percentage. If you add a second discount, it applies to the already-reduced price (not the original), which is why two 20% discounts are not the same as 40% off. Any sales tax is then added to the discounted subtotal. The "effective discount" shows your total saving as a single percentage.
Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate a percentage off?
Multiply the price by the discount percentage, then subtract it. For 30% off $80: 80 × 0.30 = $24 off, so you pay $56.
Do two discounts add together?
No. A second discount applies to the already-reduced price, so 20% then 20% equals 36% off in total, not 40%. The calculator handles this for you.
Can I include sales tax?
Yes. Enter your tax rate and it is added to the discounted price to give the true final amount.
What is the "effective discount"?
It is your total saving expressed as one percentage of the original price — handy when comparing stacked deals.
